Best Guide to Make Self- Tapping Screw

The self-tapping screws are quite different from the rest on basis of their tip. This screw fastener has a fluted design to cut out some material, and allow starting screw with less effort. Studying the machine marks, it looks as though it’s made by grinding wheel notching one corner – actually a good giveaway once you observe that one side is flat, and other is round

Today, I will guide you how to make self-tapping screw at home, though it can’t be as professional as supplied by leading self-tapping screw fastener manufacturer, yet it can have said to be an instant, convenient, and handy solution to make at your own for sudden need

Steps to Make DIY self-tapping Screw Fastener

So, let’s begin with little proof of concept to confirm this tool is able to cut into screw. I can’t be sure what the best rotation speed will be required, but I can make it around 10,000 rpm. Any faster, and there were lot more sparks. Dremel has no trouble cutting the screw with this grinding disc.

I had two of the circles' one next to the other to make the granulating edge sufficiently wide to make the cut in one pass. However, how I made self-tapping screw now, but the freehand approach makes it difficult to get this result with consistency. It would work a lot if I could make some kind of custom dremel attachment

The thought being something like this, where one side acknowledges the device while another gap on top aides the screw. I’ve been through all dremel accessories for something that I can use. I finally found one piece that could work. I measured it to fit snug inside 25mm hole.

I started with building attachment out of small two-by-four cutoff. First thing is the 25mm hole for the dremel. The right position of screw guide whole can be bit tricky to locate. Nevertheless, in straight direction, I use dremel to mark expected depth of cutting disc.

Make sure to make it a careful layout work with square to mark an expected cutting edge. The aim is to expose exactly one quadrant of screw to grinding disc. When all that’s work out looking through the screw guide hole, it should look like this;

Benefit of Self-tapping screw?

I was wondering, what is the benefit of using self-tapping screw? To get answer, I try a simple test and measure it. I drive a screw into hard maple placed on top of bathroom scale, I can measure the pressure applied before the screw starts. First the regular screws, then I inserted self-tapping screws then result was something like this;

It looks like an average with the self-tapping screw, you’re applying 2.7 LB less pressure.
